About us:

Hi, I’m Ally Marsh, founder of Be Better Balms. My obsession with herbs started at a very early age.

Meet my family:

My grandmother used to grow many medicinal herbs in her garden in Israel.

She used to concoct many different infusions, decoctions, tinctures, compresses, balms and more to heal everyone that came to her house. For every ailment there was a herbal solution in my grandmother’s house!

I gained a lot of practical knowledge from her together with the love of nature and the love of growing herbs and getting my hands dirty in the garden!

My mother was also a big influence. My mum is a yoga teacher and has been making her own skin care for many years, so it was a common thing to walk around my house with yogurt and honey on your face and olive oil on your hair...

Growing Herbs:

growing your own herbs at home

There is something very instinctive about growing things – seeing things grow, develop, producing new life, and then reaping the benefits – that’s something that comes naturally. It’s in our DNA.

I find growing herbs a very healing activity - an experience of getting in touch with myself, with nature, with growth, and then using those herbs for people’s benefit.

I also enjoy getting in touch with the history of the plant - For example, Aloe Vera is a very ancient plant. It is said that Alexander the great went to war to conquer Socotra islands next to Yemen, because Aloe vera was growing there. Cleopatra used Aloe Vera as part of her beauty regime. Herbs have been used for thousands of years. There is an ancient Egyptian papyrus called the Ebers Papyrus that mentions over 800 herbs that were used for medicine, cosmetics and more. There is a document from ancient Babylon that is 4000 years ago. On that ancient document it lists some medicinal herbs that were used back then – herbs including bay leaf, coriander, fennel seeds and thyme.

There is real pleasure in knowing your herbs, and knowing where they came from. Knowing the historical context they have, I believe, makes the experience more holistic. There is a lot of reassurance and beauty in using things that people have used for thousands of years and be informed by ancient remedies that have stood the test of time. I rely on this knowledge when I formulate my products.

Dirt under the fingernails –  Nature’s Formula

When I grew up I moved to Australia and New Zealand and studied nutrition and chemistry (University of Otago), Aromatherapy, herbal manufacturing and massage (Southern School of Natural Therapies).

In 2005, I founded Nature’s Formula Massage Retreats together with Eileen Egerton which include a chain of massage retreats around Melbourne.

I also launched a line of natural skin care products (Nature’s Formula Natural Skin Care).

In addition, I have been facilitating workshops, teaching people how to make their own natural concoctions. These workshops include natural skin care, eco-house cleaning, natural first aid, herbal remedies in everyday use, natural perfume making and many more. all the workshops are focused on empowering people to reconnect with the healing ability of mother nature.

From SEED TO SKIN on the Mornington Peninsula -

Throughout my career I have always remained close to herbs, always growing a pot with some herbs…But it was only when I moved with my family to a sizable property that I was able to take my passion for herbs to the next level – where I literally go from SEED TO SKIN – I have a substantial herbal garden here on our beautiful property on the Mornington Peninsula, where I grow many medicinal herbs including chickweed, Lavender, Chamomile,  Echinacea, Calendula, Aloe Vera, Comfrey, Borage, Basil, Rosemary, Mint and more. These beautiful herbs are then hand harvested at the optimal time, infused (hot or cold infusion) and used (together with other ingredients that are sourced as locally as possible)  to make a range of Herbal Remedial Balms (Be Better Balms). These handmade balms aid everyday ailments including rashes, burns, cuts, aches and pains, headaches and more.

All the products are handcrafted by me at our property on the Mornington Peninsula at my artisan lab.
